Email marketing is a great way to get your message out. It’s simple and does not require a lot of computer knowledge. But an email marketing campaign is limited in reach by the number of email addresses on your email address list.
A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post about Obama’s successful email marketing campaign. The tips in this post are very helpful, but they are only helpful once you have an email list. The post does not teach you how to develop your own list. I did some research to help GMT users collect email addresses. And last week, Vertical Response posted a blog post called “29 Ways to Collect Email Address for your Business”.
This list has a lot of great ideas. It recommends every thing from sending opt-in emails to everyone in your address book to having a pop up window ask for people’s email address when they leave your website. Twenty nine ways to collect emails addresses is a great start, but it is not a comprehensive. Not all of these ideas will work for you, but take a look at the list and be creative. Use the ones that might work. Most of the ideas on the list have little or no cost associated with them so if they do not work for you, move on to the next one. No harm done.
Pleas post a comment if you have any other ideas to share with the other GMT groups.

Though not directly related
Though not directly related to collecting addresses, it is very important to think about the opt-in and opt-out experience for your recipients. Before you start sending messages, be sure to run a test or three to ensure that the process is simple, instructions are clear, and that it works. Nancy Shwartz has a great post on this topic at http://www.gettingattention.org/my_weblog/2009/08/put-yourself-in-the-shoes-of-your-memberuserdonor.html.
