A strong tagline does double-duty -- working to extend your organization's name and mission, while delivering a focused, memorable and repeatable message to your base. It's one of your most basic, and effective, marketing tools, but the 2008 GettingAttention.org survey showed that 72% of nonprofit organizations don't have a tagline or rate theirs as performing poorly.
Take 3 minutes now to enter your nonprofit's tagline at http://is.gd/19skW. All entrants will receive a free copy of the fully-updated 2009 Nonprofit Tagline Report in late 2009. 2. Be in the Know - How GMT Tools Can Help Your Group: Where are all the reporters going?
We’ve been hearing many well-justified concerns from our members about the quick and frustrating movement in the major media markets this spring. As a result, we are adding a few new steps in our routine to provide you with helpful information about the largest movements among the environmental reports:
1. A few sections below, you can read our first Newsroom Notes section of our monthly newsletter, which will provide a quick look into an important update about a contact or at an outlet. Scroll down to Item 5 to get a peek into a new Chicago Green Magazine.
2. Our staff is now posting updates and relative tips about new and retiring reporters in our Discussion Forum. We encourage you to stay posted on these updates, as well as to contribute your own comments with any additional information that you can share with GMT members
For a few other external resources, check our Link of the Month (Item 4)

3. Buzz from the Beat: Communicating on Climate Change
Bud Ward, an accomplished environment reporter and the founding editor of Environment Writer, recently released a publication that addresses the barriers of communicating on climate change from both a scientific and news-oriented perspective.
“Communicating on Climate Change: An Essential Resource for Journalists, Scientists, and Educators” is a guide to writing about climate change for academics, scientists, and journalists. It touches on a series of workshops developed by the Metcalf Institute about addressing the challenges of this complex issue.
The publication is available for free by download in pdf format (7 MB) at: http://www.metcalfinstitute.org/dl/CommunicatingOnClimateChange.pdf
Read more about Bud’s publication or order a print copy at http://www.metcalfinstitute.org/Communicating_ClimateChange.htm

3. Link of the month: Track the Reporters That You Need the Most
In addition to the updates added by the Vocus Research Team and those in the GMT Member Forum, below are three additional resources, two online and one print, where you can learn about the most recent media moves at a quick glance. The Vocus and Cision blogs are updated daily and list media on all beats. The SEJournal is published quarterly, and focuses specifically on environmental journalists.
- Vocus’s Media Blog, http://www.vocus.com/invocus/index.html, focuses on the general media industry and includes a Media Moves Archive, which notes comings & goings of reporters.
- The Cision blog also has a section on media research, http://blog.us.cision.com/category/media_research/
- Society of Environmental Journalists’ SEJournal. More information at http://www.sej.org/publications/main

6. Let’s Welcome 3 New Members to our GMT Community
Save the Frogs protects amphibian populations and the habitats in which they live, and in so doing create a society that respects, enjoys and protects nature and wildlife. One-third of the world’s 6,485 species of frogs, toads, newts, salamanders and caecilians are on the verge of extinction, and 200 species have completely disappeared in recent years.
The Electronics TakeBack Coalition (ETBC) promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry. Our goal is to protect the health and well being of electronics users, workers, and the communities where electronics are produced and discarded by requiring consumer electronics manufacturers and brand owners to take full responsibility for the life cycle of their products, through effective public policy requirements or enforceable agreements.
The Virginia Organizing Project is a statewide, multi-issue citizens' organization committed to challenging injustice by empowering people in local communities to address issues that affect the quality of their lives. Since 1995, VOP has intentionally involved people who have never participated in working for change alongside those with many years of experience.

7. Media Database Q & A: Vocus PR’s New Policy regarding Laid Off Reporters
Found a reporter who has been removed from the database? Several members have approached us with concerns about reporters who have been laid off and removed from the database, but who have a high probability of resurfacing as a freelance reporter.
To respond to these concerns, we inquired with the Vocus Research team about their new research policy for laid off reporters. They agreed that many prominent reporters who have been laid off from their outlets will probably resurface as freelance journalists.
However, there is generally a period of time before that happens. The Vocus research team has therefore instituted a type of “holding” outlet for these contacts until their research reveals that these contacts have either taken to self-employment as a freelancer or have secured employment with a new media outlet. The name of this outlet is Contacts in Transition: Pending Verification by Vocus Research Team.
The contacts will remain attached to this temporary “holding” outlet until they have verified their new contact information. If the prominent contacts do not surface through those means, the Team proactively attempts to find them after several weeks have passed since the layoff.
The research team is implementing this new process so that current Activities and News that you may have added to the contact record do not become orphaned from the profile.
Please be advised that this new project that has just been kicked off and that more contacts will be added to the “holdig” outlet as the research team works through data and determines who should be placed in that holding area.
We encourage you to keep us updated as to how this new system meets your needs and to add in your own updates to the system as they arise.
Details for how to update or add a reporter are located in our Support Center at: http://members.greenmediatoolshed.org/node/23144
Questions on how you should submit a media contact update? Contact Nina Schwartz at (202)408-8850 x10 or nina@greenmediatoolshed.org, or Michelle Kohn at x13 or michelle@greenmediatoolshed.org
