Intern for Green Media Toolshed (GMT)

Location: Washington, DC

Description

The Intern is a part time position that is perfect for someone looking to learn about new media and explore online campaigns and organizing in a professional setting. The Intern is responsible for providing assistance to the President with research, writing, editing, and other administrative needs. The Intern will like to write and do research, be punctual, have superior interpersonal and professional communication skills, and possess solid time management skills. The Intern will also like to work independently and be committed to progressive issue work supporting environmentalists and the Occupy movement. 


Responsibilities

The Intern will work in three main areas – research and writing, social media, and administrative support:

1. Research and Writing (primarily for President)

  • Provide research assistance for President for program work, foundations, web services, or ideas that the President wants to investigate.
  • Complete other online research that relate to online organizing and campaigns (i.e. follow people on twitter, TED Talks, and YouTube).
  • Edit dictations, letters, reports, proposals, and other items for President.
  • Monitor social media and participate on behalf of Green Media Toolshed (must be proficient with Twitter and Facebook).
  • Promote content and blog pieces.
  • Take and edit notes for President as needed.
  • Prepare copies and other materials as needed.
  • Specific projects and other duties as assigned.

2. Administrative Support (primarily for President)

  • Provide administrative assistance to President as needed. This may include organizing papers, data entry, phone calls, and travel planning.    
  • Taking notes, especially in meetings.
  • Scheduling and calendar management.
  • Provide support if needed to the other staff.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

A successful Intern will handle the job responsibilities listed above in a busy environment while meeting multiple deadlines. The Intern should be professional and articulate, have a high energy level, and possess an interest in GMT’s work.  The capacity to proceed with objectives with little supervision is required.   The Intern should be available to work part or all of standard business hours (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.), Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. We will establish a set schedule based on a minimum of 15 hours per week but are flexible for up to 30 hours per week.  

 

SOFTWARE SKILLS

  • Competent Internet research skills.
  • Experience with social media, either in a personal or professional capacity.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Knowledge of e-mail programs. 

 

Compensation

This is an excellent position for someone who is eager to gain professional experience and explore online campaigns and organizing. No degree is required. A weekly stipend of $150 will be provided to cover transportation and the cost of living.  The stipend can be renegotiated during the internship if the hours worked consistently exceed the required minimum.
